What is ovarian drilling?

Laparoscopic ovarian drilling, also known as ovarian electropuncture, consists of creating multiple perforations (about 15 small holes) in the surface of the ovary using the laser or an electric scalpel to stimulate spontaneous ovulation.

This treatment, followed by the administration of clomiphene citrate, appears to be as effective as gonadotropin treatment but reducing the disadvantages of the latter regarding the risk of OHSS and multiple gestation.

Ovarian drilling can be done in one or both ovaries.
